Frequently Asked Questions
What is therapy like?
We understand that it might feel uncomfortable to open up to a stranger, but we assure you that that feeling will pass quickly during your first session. Our clinicians are warm, welcoming, and eager to help you reach your goals.
Think of therapy as the opportunity to have a neutral person help you sort through your thoughts, clarify your wants and needs, and support you through discovering healthy ways to achieve them. Everyone’s goals are different. For some, goals may be negative symptom reduction; for others, goals may relate to resolving childhood trauma that has become part of the foundation of their being; for others, goals may be to discover the roots of their behavior, and why they act and communicate the way they do. Sessions at Firefly Therapy are designed to help clients heal from prior experiences, discover and nurture their own capabilities, and ultimately find greater happiness in their lives.

Is it really confidential?
Yes, with a few exceptions. In general, information cannot be released to anyone, including family members, without the client’s written permission. However, there are four instances when we would need to break confidentiality:

-
If the therapist believes that the client is in imminent danger of hurting him/herself. Suicidal thoughts in general do not constitute imminent danger, but plans to act on them do.
-
If the therapist believes that the client is planning to hurt someone else.
-
If the therapist becomes aware of any current case of child abuse.
-
If a judge were to issue a court order requesting our records.

We’ll go over all of this in detail during your first appointment so that everything is clear.
Will my insurance cover it?

-
If you have Aetna, yes, we are in-network.
-
If you have another insurance company, yes, with your out-of-network benefits.
-
Services at Firefly Therapy are out-of-network and are reimbursable through most insurance companies. That means that clients pay the full fee each week, submit a receipt to their insurance companies, and then depending on their particular plan, may be reimbursed for some portion of that amount.
-
Insurance reimbursement varies widely from plan to plan, even within the same company. Clients generally get back between 50-80%, after their deductible has been met, if they have one. It often works out to be similar to the cost of a copay. Clients who plan to submit for reimbursement are encouraged to call their insurance companies to inquire about their coverage.
-
These are the questions to ask:
-
Do I have out-of-network mental health coverage for telehealth?
-
Do I have a deductible and if so, how much has been met?
-
What is my reimbursement rate?
-
Is there any limit to the number of sessions that are covered?
-
They may ask for a procedural code (called a CPT code) in order to look up your benefit. These are the codes to provide:

Individual therapy: 90834
Group therapy: 90853

How long do people stay in therapy?
There is no predetermined timeline for someone to remain in therapy. Every person is different, every lifetime is different, and every path to happiness is different.
A person’s course of treatment is determined on an individual basis, by the client and the therapist. There is no minimum number of sessions that a client is obligated to complete, nor a maximum number of sessions upon which they must end. We are happy to continue working with clients through the many phases of self-discovery and growth. We enjoy seeing our clients continue to progress just as much as they do!

What is it like to be in a group?
Participating in one of Firefly Therapy’s groups is a unique and powerful healing experience. Sessions are facilitated by one of our licensed clinicians in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere. Clients will connect with other women who have experienced a similar situation. Through that shared experience, they will find strength and support from their peers, while receiving evidence-based treatment from their counselor.

During each session, the counselor will focus on clients’ individual concerns, and also address common ways in which the impact of trauma often seeps into our daily lives. Practical techniques will be provided to help clients overcome the effects of trauma in order to lead their healthiest, happiest, and most fulfilling lives.

Groups meet once a week, for an hour and a half. They are capped at a maximum of 7 participants, and are open to women only. Groups are ongoing, and new clients may join at any time.
